They have also brought up a complaint that many patients describe to their doctor: hair loss that starts a few weeks or months after the treatment begins. Social media already coined “Ozempic face”, then “Ozempic nails”. Hair is the best studied of the three signs. Here is what the medical reviews show, why rapid weight loss makes hair fall out, and how to find out what is going on in your case.

In brief

Two recent systematic reviews describe an association between GLP-1 receptor agonists and hair loss, mainly with semaglutide and tirzepatide, and more often in women. The most frequently cited type is telogen effluvium, a diffuse shedding triggered by physiological stress, here rapid weight loss. A study presented at the 2026 EADV congress points the same way (abnormal hair loss in 50% of users versus 34% of controls). The data are observational: causality has not been established. In most cases this type of shedding is temporary, but a deficiency in iron, zinc or vitamins can keep it going. A blood test can check this: the YuBoost Hair Loss Panel measures 12 markers at home and without a prescription. Never stop a prescribed treatment without the advice of the doctor who follows you.

Ozempic and hair loss: what the studies say

No randomised trial has yet been designed to answer this question. What exists are analyses of pharmacovigilance databases and cohort studies, gathered in literature reviews.

The most recent, published in 2026 in Science Progress (Gupta et al.), screened 133 publications and kept 24 studies on hair loss linked to GLP-1 receptor agonists. Its main findings:

semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy) and tirzepatide (Mounjaro) show the highest rates of hair loss and appear most often in pharmacovigilance databases;

the two most cited forms of hair loss are androgenetic alopecia and telogen effluvium. Tirzepatide, which is associated with the greatest weight loss, is most often linked to telogen effluvium;

with semaglutide, hair loss appears dose-related: doses below 2 mg per week are rarely involved, while the higher doses used for obesity are involved more often;

women seem to be affected more often;

rapid weight loss emerges as a possible contributing factor, particularly for telogen effluvium.

Another systematic review, published in Cureus in 2025 (Alsuwailem et al.), covered 5 studies and 2,905 adults treated with tirzepatide. Its results are contradictory: some studies report hair loss as a skin-related adverse event, while others describe improvement and regrowth. Both teams conclude that larger prospective studies are needed to establish cause and effect. In other words, the signal is real, but it does not allow us to say that the drug itself makes hair fall out.

A third, more recent source was presented in late September 2026 at the congress of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology (EADV), and reported by MedicalXpress. It is a case-control study carried out in France, the United States, Brazil and Mexico, comparing 575 users of a GLP-1 receptor agonist with 1,329 controls (people with type 2 diabetes or obesity who were not on the treatment). Abnormal hair loss was reported by 50% of users versus 34% of controls. The study also covers nails, which ties in with the “Ozempic nails” theme: nail detachment in 39% of users versus 9% of controls, and nail discolouration in 46% versus 17%. The authors themselves state that this work cannot establish that GLP-1 receptor agonists caused these changes. These are results presented at a congress and relayed by the specialist press, to be read with the same caution as the reviews above.

Why rapid weight loss makes hair fall out

A hair goes through a cycle: a long growth phase, then a resting phase, then shedding. In telogen effluvium, a physiological stress pushes an unusual number of hairs into the resting phase at the same time. Some time later, they fall out together. The shedding is diffuse, across the whole scalp, with no precise bald patch. Classic triggers are a high fever, childbirth, surgery, intense stress or a very restrictive diet.

GLP-1 receptor agonists reduce appetite markedly. The body then receives fewer calories, proteins and micronutrients in a short time. The hair follicle is one of the fastest-renewing tissues; according to the review by Almohanna et al. (Dermatology and Therapy, 2019), vitamins and minerals, including iron and zinc, play a role in how it works, and a deficiency could be a modifiable risk factor for hair loss. The authors stress, however, that the evidence is still incomplete.

So this is a plausible hypothesis rather than a demonstrated mechanism: rapid weight loss acts as the trigger, and an insufficient nutrient intake may prolong or worsen the shedding. That is precisely the part where you can act.

Is it temporary? Does the hair grow back?

Telogen effluvium is generally reversible once the trigger has passed, and the hair grows back. This is the usual course described for this type of shedding, whatever the trigger. The reviews cited above do not, however, allow us to give a precise duration specific to GLP-1 treatments: studies do not follow patients for long enough. Two situations deserve particular attention:

shedding that lasts or worsens beyond a few months, or that comes with areas of thinning: it may reveal androgenetic alopecia, which weight loss can unmask, or another cause;

shedding combined with marked fatigue, breathlessness, brittle nails or very dry skin: this picture suggests a deficiency, in particular of iron.

In both cases, a medical examination and a blood test make it possible to tell a simple effluvium from a problem that needs treatment.

What is worth measuring in your blood

Hair loss during a weight-loss treatment does not have a single cause. The idea is to look for what may be sustaining it, and to correct only what is really low. Here are the relevant markers and where YuBoost measures them:

What to check

Markers

Where YuBoost measures it

Iron stores

Ferritin

Hair Loss Panel · Vitamin and mineral assessment (with iron and transferrin)

Zinc

Zinc

Hair Loss Panel · Vitamin and mineral assessment

B vitamins

B12, folic acid (B9), biotin (B8)

Hair Loss Panel (B12, B9, biotin) · Vitamin and mineral assessment (B6, B9, B12)

Vitamin D, magnesium, calcium

Vitamin D, magnesium, calcium

Vitamin and mineral assessment

Hormonal background and stress

Estradiol, testosterone, cortisol

Hair Loss Panel

Autoimmune background, liver

ANA · GGT, GOT, GPT

Hair Loss Panel

Thyroid

TSH, T3, T4

Complete medical check-up

The Hair Loss Panel (CHF 450) covers 12 biomarkers: ANA, ferritin, cortisol, zinc, vitamin B12, biotin, estradiol, testosterone, folic acid, GGT, GOT and GPT. If you also want to check vitamin D, magnesium and calcium, the vitamin and mineral assessment (CHF 370, 11 biomarkers) measures them along with iron, ferritin, transferrin and zinc. The thyroid is measured in neither of them: it is part of the complete medical check-up (CHF 350). In every case, a qualified nurse comes to take the sample at your home, with no prescription needed, and a doctor interprets the results.

One practical point: tell us about your injectable treatment when you book, as well as any supplements. For the Hair Loss Panel, YuBoost asks you to stop iron, zinc and biotin supplements 48 hours before the blood draw, to avoid an artificial peak.

When a patient tells me her hair is falling out since she started losing weight, I do not suggest a supplement at random. If one of these markers is low, we know what to correct.

          Dr Alexandra Miles, YuBoost

What to do if you are on a weight-loss treatment

Talk to the doctor who prescribes your treatment. Do not stop it or change the dose on your own. The pace of weight loss and dose adjustments are for them to decide.

Watch your diet. When appetite drops, it becomes harder to meet your needs for protein, iron and zinc. A dietitian consultation is useful, especially when weight loss is rapid.

Measure before you supplement. Iron taken without need can be poorly tolerated, and zinc or biotin supplements can interfere with some tests. A blood test shows what is really missing. For the role of biotin, see our dedicated page.

If a deficiency is confirmed, the doctor chooses how to correct it: diet, an oral supplement, or, where indicated, a vitamin infusion. YuBoost offers in particular the Strong Hair infusion, given at home, only after a blood test and medical advice. It does not replace treating the cause.

Key takeaways on Ozempic and hair loss

Hair loss on semaglutide or tirzepatide is a signal described in several reviews, more marked with high doses and in women. It most often looks like a telogen effluvium triggered by rapid weight loss, and it is generally temporary. The data are observational and do not prove that the drug is the direct cause. What can be done remains practical: talk to the prescribing doctor, look after your nutritional intake, and check iron stores, zinc and vitamins with a blood test. The YuBoost Hair Loss Panel measures these markers at your home in French-speaking Switzerland, with a medical report.

Frequently asked questions

<details open>

Does Ozempic cause hair loss?

Recent systematic reviews describe an association between GLP-1 receptor agonists, mainly semaglutide and tirzepatide, and hair loss. The data are observational and causality has not been established. The mechanism most often suggested is telogen effluvium triggered by rapid weight loss.

</details>
<details>

Do Wegovy and Mounjaro have the same effect on hair?

According to the 2026 review, semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy) and tirzepatide (Mounjaro) show the highest rates of hair loss among GLP-1 receptor agonists. Tirzepatide, which is associated with the greatest weight loss, is most often linked to telogen effluvium. The other molecules (liraglutide, dulaglutide, exenatide) are less studied and seem to carry a lower risk.

</details>
<details>

Is hair loss linked to weight loss permanent?

Telogen effluvium is generally reversible once the trigger has passed. If shedding lasts or worsens, or if hair thins in patches, a medical examination is useful: it may be androgenetic alopecia or a deficiency to correct.

</details>
<details>

Which blood test should I have for hair loss on a weight-loss treatment?

The most useful markers are ferritin, zinc, vitamin B12, folic acid, and depending on the context the thyroid and hormones. The YuBoost Hair Loss Panel (CHF 450) measures 12 biomarkers, including the first four, at home and without a prescription. The thyroid is measured in the complete medical check-up.

</details>
<details>

Should I take biotin or iron to limit hair loss?

Not before measuring. Iron supplementation only makes sense if your stores are low, and biotin has only shown an effect in people who are deficient. A blood test shows what is really missing, and a doctor decides how to correct it.

</details>
<details>

Should I stop my treatment if my hair is falling out?

No, not on your own initiative. Talk to the doctor who follows you: they will assess the pace of weight loss, the dose and the need for a nutritional check.

</details>

Sources

• Taïeb C. et al., Association between GLP-1 receptor agonists and nail disorders: Results from a multinational case-control study, presented at the EADV 2026 congress, reported by MedicalXpress, 30 September 2026: link

Take action

Is your hair falling out? Measure what is missing

Ferritin, zinc, B12, folic acid, hormones, cortisol, autoimmune and liver markers: 12 biomarkers. They have also brought up a complaint that many patients describe to their doctor: hair loss that starts a few weeks or months after the treatment begins. Social media already coined "Ozempic face", then "Ozempic nails".

Its main findings:

semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy) and tirzepatide (Mounjaro) show the highest rates of hair loss and appear most often in pharmacovigilance databases;

the two most cited forms of hair loss are androgenetic alopecia and telogen effluvium. Tirzepatide, which is associated with the greatest weight loss, is most often linked to telogen effluvium;

with semaglutide, hair loss appears dose-related: doses below 2 mg per week are rarely involved, while the higher doses used for obesity are involved more often;

women seem to be affected more often;

rapid weight loss emerges as a possible contributing factor, particularly for telogen effluvium.

The study also covers nails, which ties in with the "Ozempic nails" theme: nail detachment in 39% of users versus 9% of controls, and nail discolouration in 46% versus 17%.

Two situations deserve particular attention:

shedding that lasts or worsens beyond a few months, or that comes with areas of thinning: it may reveal androgenetic alopecia, which weight loss can unmask, or another cause;

shedding combined with marked fatigue, breathlessness, brittle nails or very dry skin: this picture suggests a deficiency, in particular of iron.

<details open>

Does Ozempic cause hair loss?

Recent systematic reviews describe an association between GLP-1 receptor agonists, mainly semaglutide and tirzepatide, and hair loss.
